Choosing spiral bits

Decide which face matters

An upcut directs chips toward the router and can favor the face farther from it. A downcut directs chips the other way and can favor the near face. Use the maker’s guidance for your particular material and setup.

Check where compression begins

Compression geometry uses opposite flute directions along the cutter. Look for the length of the tip section and the machine the model is designed for before selecting it for a through-cut.

Department questions

Will every compression cutter work at the same depth?

Check the manufacturer’s transition dimension and machining guidance. Different cutters have different flute geometry.

Why do some spiral bits say CNC only?

They are documented for a machine-controlled setup. Confirm how the exact model is approved for use before ordering.

Can I use cutting length as a depth setting?

Use cutting length to compare geometry and refer to the model and router instructions for allowable passes.
